As many people gathered in one accord to support their favorite team , they had no idea it will turn out being bloody.
Today marks 16 years of the Accra Sports Stadium disaster that claimed the innocent lives of 127 Ghanaians.
On May 9,2001, 127 lives were taken as a result of a football game between Accra Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.
The Phobians ( Hearts) were leading the Porcupine Warriors (Kotoko) 2-1 with only five minutes to end the game. The disappointed fans of Kotoko began throwing plastics on the stadium and this led to the intervention of the police . With the firing of tear gas into the crowd, a stampede was caused with gates tightly locked. At the end, 127 fans Who died were choked to death – compressive asphyxia.
There were critics as to why the police intervened with a tear gas , but one can guess they thought that was the only option to prevent a fight.Hardly did anyone anticipate the sad end of the game.
The question still remains unanswered. Have Ghanaians learnt from this incident?
On behalf of all Ghanaians, may their souls continue to rest in peace!
